Harold Hirshman Selected as the 2006 Recipient of the Edward J. Lewis II Pro Bono Service Award
07-17-2006
The Edward J. Lewis II Pro Bono Service Award honors attorneys who display a deep commitment to the fundamental principles of equal protection and equal justice in the community through outstanding pro bono service.
Harold was chosen to receive this award over many strong candidates due to his superior qualifications in the following criteria:
- Significant pro bono cases or matters that helped residents of the Chicago area affected by poverty, abuse and discrimination;
- Length and breadth of pro bono commitment and experience;
- Success in involving and inspiring other attorneys to do pro bono work; and
- Other significant accomplishments that have improved access to justice for residents of the Chicago area affected by poverty, abuse and discrimination.
Throughout his 37-year career at Sonnenschein, Harold has displayed a profound and abiding commitment to providing legal services for the public good and upholding the fundamental principles of equal protection and equal justice.
Harold has taken on seemingly hopeless causes for the poor, the imprisoned, the mentally disabled, indigent veterans, gays and people of color. Alone and in conjunction with some of the finest pro bono organizations in the Chicagoland area, Harold has battled those who would infringe on the individual rights for people who have no voice and no spokesperson.
This award was presented to Harold during the Chicago Bar Foundation and Chicago Bar Association Eighth Annual Pro Bono and Public Service Awards luncheon on July 27, 2006, at the Renaissance Hotel in Chicago.
