Pandemic Influenza Update
July 18, 2006
Experts are warning of a flu pandemic that could strike as many as 67 million Americans, kill from 200,000 to 2 million Americans, and cost the American economy from $70-$160 billion in lost productivity and medical expenses. In light of these staggering estimates, policy makers, business leaders and health care experts are encouraging all stakeholders, as well as individuals, to develop plans that respond to a potential pandemic flu outbreak.
Recent actions by both Congress and the Administration are helping to shape policies in this area, especially as they relate to public health and business preparedness. At this point, however, activities are very broad and focus on issues of national significance. Individual organizations, such as hospitals, medical practices, private businesses, local chambers of commerce and other entities, are encouraged to develop their own preparation plans.
