06-16-2008 Jeff Fort Speaks at Carbon Trading Conference
Sonnenschein partner Jeff Fort will speak at the 2nd annual IQPC Carbon Trading Conference on June 25 in New York.  He will participate in a panel on the evaluation of carbon offset credits in the transition from voluntary to mandatory markets.  This panel will review and discuss the status of carbon offset credits, allowances and other emission rights, discuss offset credits and allowances under California Climate Action Registry, RGGI, and CDM, and examine the value of credits under a mandatory federal program.

06-19-2007 From Washington: Wayne Rogers Testifies at Hearing
Sonnenschein attorney Wayne Rogers testified before the U.S.-China Economic and Security Review Commission on June 15th. This hearing examined the trends and impact of China's energy consumption, the strategic and environmental effects of that consumption, and current and possible future U.S.-China cooperative programs on energy and the environment.  Mr. Rogers, who discussed private sector strategies for addressing the effects of China's energy consumption, was the only law firm partner testifying at the hearing.
06-19-2007 Technology Developments
As "Blue Energy"  technology (which utilizes offshore waves, tides, and currents to power turbines) moves closer to becoming a reality, Congress is considering how to properly manage this rapidly growing field of development.  Recently Jason Blak, CEO of Finavera Resources (a company that is pursuing development of one of the first blue energy projects in the U.S.) testified before Congress about the need for investment tax credits similar to other renewable energy products and to create clear and consistent licensing and permitting procedures.

03-15-2007 From Washington: Automakers Commit to Economywide Greenhouse Emissions Cap
Just days after Speaker Nancy Pelosi stated that there would not be a "cap and trade" component in the first set of climate change legislation presented to the House on March 14, leaders of the four largest automakers stated they would support such a cap.  Legislation is now expected from the House Commerce Committee by late this year to apply an economywide cap on greenhouse gas emissions blamed for global warming.
03-15-2007 In California
The Attorney General of California has filed a lawsuit against San Bernardino County alleging that the County failed to adequately consider potential climate change associated with its recently-adopted General Plan.  The outcome of the suit—the first of its kind by the Attorney General—will determine the extent to which the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA) requires public agencies to identify, evaluate, and mitigate potential climate change impacts associated with development projects.
03-15-2007 Technology Developments
Greenwire reported on March 14 that one of the nation's largest power producers announced plans today to install carbon-capture technologies on coal-fired power plants in West Virginia and Oklahoma.  American Electric Power of Columbus, Ohio, said it would add post-combustion carbon dioxide scrubbers that use chilled ammonia to remove CO2 from flue gases.  Tests of the technology will begin this summer at a small power plant in Wisconsin.
