Sonnenschein Continues Aggressive National Expansion of Venture Technology Practice with Addition of Joseph Bartlett
February 4, 2008
(NEW YORK, February 4, 2008)—Sonnenschein Nath & Rosenthal LLP today announced that Joseph W. Bartlett has joined the national law firm as an of counsel in its Venture Technology and Fund Services groups. Bartlett's practice focuses on venture capital, initial public offerings, private equity finance and alternative investments. He comes to Sonnenschein from Fish & Richardson P.C. He was previously at Morrison & Foerster LLP.
"Joe's decision to join our national venture practice is an exciting reaffirmation of our market position," said Victor H. Boyajian, national chair of Sonnenschein's Venture Technology Group. "We are confident that Joe's longtime leadership role in the sector, as one of its senior statesmen on the East Coast and nationally, will accelerate our strategic growth and market reach in the venture capital, technology and private equity markets. This is particularly so when considered together with the many other attorneys who have embraced our platform and recently joined us from our peer firms from Silicon Valley to the East Coast."
Bartlett has been involved in private equity, both venture and buyouts, since the early 1960s, including the first Greylock partnership. He combines his full-time practice with teaching, previously at Stanford University and New York University, and now at Cornell University's S.C. Johnson Graduate School of Management; writing, including many of the standard text books on private equity; and research.
"Sonnenschein has an impressive record in the venture technology field," said Bartlett. "I am thrilled to be joining the firm where I will have an opportunity to expand my practice to include other corporate transactional and intellectual property matters."
In addition to his representation of the buy-and-sell side in venture capital, buyouts, and IPO and M&A exits, Bartlett is counsel to corporate boards, committees and individual directors on corporate governance issues. He has served as a bankruptcy trustee, counsel to the DBL Liquidating Trust, adviser on executive compensation, and counsel to registered investment companies and private equity funds in the process of organization, such as Bain Capital and Chemical Ventures.
Bartlett has been a director of a major regional bank and a savings and loan, plus public and private emerging growth companies. He served as law clerk to Chief Justice Earl Warren, general counsel and undersecretary of the U.S. Department of Commerce, and of counsel to the Massachusetts Executive Office for Administration and Finance. Bartlett, who received an L.L.B. degree from Stanford Law School and an A.B. degree from Harvard College, is also a past president of the Boston Bar Association.
