Life Sciences Attorney Jeffrey Baumel Joins Sonnenschein's Venture Technology Group

May 14, 2008

(SHORT HILLS, N.J., May 14, 2008) - Sonnenschein Nath & Rosenthal LLP announced today that Jeffrey A. Baumel has joined the national law firm’s office here as a partner in its Venture Technology Group.  Baumel is a highly-regarded venture, securities and transactional lawyer, who concentrates on representing emerging-growth life sciences companies.

“Jeff has a real passion for emerging-growth companies and the convergence of his work at the strategic points of life sciences, venture and securities will create broad synergies for us,” said Victor H. Boyajian, national chair of Sonnenschein’s Venture Technology Group.  “His practice will add considerably to Sonnenschein’s life sciences capabilities.”

Baumel’s practice focuses primarily on life sciences and medical technology.  He has a particularly strong connection to the venture community in the life sciences sector throughout the Northeast.  Combined with other additions to the firm in the past several years, Sonnenschein’s life sciences practice now stretches from coast to coast with 60 practitioners devoting their time to this key area.

In addition to his work in the life sciences, Baumel has spent much of his career as a securities lawyer, representing businesses from the point of initial formation and capitalization through and beyond the public financing stage.  He has worked with clients in connection with public offerings and private placements of equity and debt securities involving hundreds of millions of dollars.

“Sonnenschein’s emerging-growth practice has the national platform that has become a necessity in the representation of venture-backed and publicly-traded life sciences companies,” said Baumel. “The recent growth of the firm’s life sciences capabilities was very attractive to me, and I know my clients will benefit from Sonnenschein’s leadership in this space.  The depth of the firm’s intellectual property, regulatory and policy practices distinguishes it from other firms in the market.”

Baumel received a J.D. degree from Cornell University Law School and a B.A. degree, cum laude, from the University of Rochester. He comes to Sonnenschein from McCarter & English, LLP, where he was chairman of the life sciences practice group.

According Dow Jones' Private Equity Analyst, Sonnenschein's Venture Technology Group ranks among the top 10 firms nationally for the number of venture capital deals closed in 2007.
