Kansas Corporation Commission General Counsel Joins Sonnenschein

(KANSAS CITY, Mo., May 6, 2008) - Sonnenschein Nath & Rosenthal LLP today announced that Susan B. Cunningham has joined the law firm as an of counsel in its Kansas City office. Cunningham will focus on legal matters relating primarily to the telecommunications and energy industries. She comes to Sonnenschein from the Kansas Corporation Commission, the state’s chief regulatory body, where she served most recently as general counsel.
“Susan will be a very valuable addition to our office here,” said Sonnenschein’s Kansas City Managing Partner James A. Heeter. “Her years of service with the Kansas Corporation Commission, and her experience with the regulated industries, will help make Sonnenschein the premier choice for dealing with regulatory matters in this region of the country.”
While at the Kansas Corporation Commission, Cunningham participated in all aspects of public utility regulation, with a concentration on electric and natural gas issues. She helped develop policies and positions on matters such as rate proceedings, mergers and acquisitions, billing standards, contract reviews and general investigations. She also reviewed and responded to consumer inquiries and complaints.
As its chief legal officer, Cunningham provided the commission with legal advice concerning rules, regulations and operations. She advised and assisted with the drafting of proposed legislation, preparing and presenting testimony, and preparing financial impact statements. In addition, she represented the commission on matters dealing with the Kansas Open Records Act, the Kansas Open Meetings Act, employment issues and budget preparation.
Prior to joining the Kansas Corporation Commission, Cunningham was a staff attorney with Kansas City Power & Light Company. In that role, she provided legal representation to KCPL and/or its officers and employees in regulatory proceedings and legal actions in Kansas and Missouri.

Cunningham received a J.D. degree from Washburn University School of Law and a B.A. degree from Olivet Nazarene University.
