Sonnenschein Expands Luxury Goods and Entertainment Branding Practice in New York with Addition of Monica B. Richman

April 2, 2008

(NEW YORK, April 2, 2008) - Sonnenschein Nath & Rosenthal LLP today announced the addition of Monica B. Richman as a partner in its rapidly growing Intellectual Property & Technology Group.  Richman joins the national law firm’s New York office to focus on brand counseling and trademark protection for premier brand owners.  She comes to Sonnenschein from Thelen Reid Brown Raysman & Steiner LLP, where she was chair of the firm’s trademark practice.

“Monica’s brand counseling and trademark experience makes her a perfect addition to our intellectual property team,” said Carol Anne Been, national chair of Sonnenschein’s Intellectual Property & Technology Group.  “The relationships she has with her clients, particularly in the areas of luxury goods and entertainment, will enable us to add great depth to our trademark, copyright and advertising practice.”

Richman’s experience includes all aspects of trademark, copyright and related matters in a wide variety of industries, including entertainment, financial services, insurance, apparel, gaming, retail and publishing.  Her relationships with her clients in these fields will enhance Sonnenschein’s growing trademark capabilities in the areas of luxury goods and entertainment.

Richman also handles intellectual property transactions, due diligence, and enforcement and defense of third-party infringement claims.  At Thelen Reid, she managed the global trademark portfolios for all of the firm’s East Coast clients.

“Sonnenschein’s record of success in the area of branding and trademark protection is very impressive,” noted Richman.  “I am delighted by the opportunity to help the firm expand the practice further and to provide my clients with the national platform that Sonnenschein offers.”

A frequent speaker and author, Richman is a member of the International Trademark Association and the New York City Bar’s Trademarks and Unfair Competition Committee.  She was a law clerk to former Chief Judge Loren A. Smith of the United States Court of Federal Claims.  Richman received a J.D. degree from Emory University School of Law and a B.A. degree, magna cum laude, from George Washington University.

Richman’s hiring comes less than a month after Sonnenschein added a 10-member patent team in its Dallas office.  Led by Gerald T. Welch, formerly deputy chair of the national intellectual property department at Patton Boggs LLP, the group handles electronics, telecommunications and medical device patents, as well as biotech patent litigation.
