Former U.S. Ambassador to Chile Gabriel Guerra-Mondragón Joins Sonnenschein's Public Law & Policy Strategies Group as Senior Advisor

(WASHINGTON, December 11, 2007) -- Sonnenschein Nath & Rosenthal LLP today announced that former U.S. ambassador to Chile Gabriel Guerra-Mondragón has joined the law firm's Public Law & Policy Strategies Group as a senior advisor in its Washington, D.C. office.  Guerra is the newest addition to the group's growing Global Services practice, whose members focus on assisting clients navigate the political, economic and regulatory landscapes of countries around the world. Guerra, who has extensive experience in diplomacy, business, politics and law, concentrates his practice on providing counsel to clients on business issues related to Latin America.

Guerra joins a talented group of professionals in the Global Services practice, which includes Sonnenschein lawyers and senior advisors with years of international transactional, business counseling, and policy expertise.  In addition, Guerra will serve as a valuable asset to clients through the firm's strategic alliance with Fontheim International, LLC, a prominent international trade, business strategy, and government relations consulting firm. 

Guerra served as U.S. ambassador to Chile from 1994 to 1998.  During this time, he presided over one of the best historical relationships between the United States and Chile and helped advocate for a comprehensive free trade agreement.  Prior to his position as ambassador, Guerra was president of TKC International, Inc, an international government relations firm in Washington, D.C., that advises domestic and international clients, including the governments of Mexico, Japan, Catalonia, Aruba, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico and Azerbaijan, as well as major international companies such as Bunge y Born and France Telecom.

Before his private sector work, Guerra was a U.S. foreign service officer at the U.S. Department of State for 10 years. During that time, he served as staff assistant to the secretary of state, desk officer for Colombia, desk officer for Nicaragua, and executive director to the U.S. National Commission to the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).  He was also special assistant to the U.S. Ambassador to Mexico and subsequently, political officer at the U.S. Embassy in Mexico.

Guerra received a J.D. degree from the University of Puerto Rico Law School, an M.A. degree from the School of Advanced International Studies at the Johns Hopkins University, and a B.A. degree from Fordham University.  He is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations, the Puerto Rican Bar Association, the Council of American Ambassadors, and the Foreign Policy Association and also serves as chairman of the board of the Puerto Rican Legal Defense and Education Fund (PRLDF).
