Larry Kocot, Former Senior Advisor to the Administrator of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, Joins Sonnenschein

(WASHINGTON, October 16, 2007) – Sonnenschein Nath & Rosenthal LLP announced today that S. Lawrence Kocot, former Senior Advisor to the Administrator of the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), has joined the law firm’s national Health Care Group as Senior Counsel in its Washington, D.C. office. Kocot’s practice focuses on strategic business advice, public law and policy and health care regulatory issues. His specific expertise in pharmaceuticals, pharmacies, pharmacy benefit managers, and health care information technology adds to the breadth and scope of the firm’s services to the health care and investment industries.

While at CMS, Kocot served as a member of the senior executive team responsible for managing policy and operations for the Medicare, Medicaid and State Children’s Health Insurance Programs and the 92 million beneficiaries they serve. He also was a key member of the management staff responsible for the launch of the new Medicare Prescription Drug Benefit (Part D) and led several high profile initiatives, including pharmaceutical delivery in disaster response.
Kocot is currently a Visiting Fellow in the Economic Studies Program at the Brookings Institution and Deputy Director of the Engelberg Center for Health Care Reform at Brookings. Before his government service, he was Senior Vice President and General Counsel at the National Association of Chain Drug Stores, where he was responsible for all legal matters and represented the industry to Congress, state legislatures and state and federal regulatory agencies.
Kocot received both his J.D. and an LL.M. in international and comparative law from Georgetown University Law Center, and both his B.A. and M.P.A. from the University of Massachusetts.
