Sonnenschein Expands Environmental Practice in Los Angeles

March 14, 2005

(LOS ANGELES, March 14, 2005)—Sonnenschein Nath & Rosenthal LLP today announced that Gary M. Roberts has joined the law firm as a partner in its Los Angeles office and a member of the firm’s national Environmental practice group.

“Gary has extensive advocacy and counseling experience regarding environment law and toxic tort matters and is widely recognized as one of the state’s foremost Proposition 65 experts,” said Edwin Reeser, managing partner of Sonnenschein’s Los Angeles office.  “He is a welcome addition to our California environmental team.”

Roberts’ experience includes state and federal litigation, as well as administrative advocacy before California’s Environmental Protection Agency.  His environmental law clients include Fortune 500 companies and major trade associations in food manufacturing, transportation, product distribution, heavy manufacturing, retail sales, consumer product manufacturing, pharmaceuticals and nutritionals.  He has served as a member of the Proposition 65 News editorial advisory board and has authored several Proposition 65 publications, including the chapter on Proposition 65 in the California Environmental Law Handbook

Roberts currently represents the South Coast Air Quality Management District in its largest enforcement action ever--two complex cases prosecuting air emission violations by BP’s Carson Refinery.

Sonnenschein’s environmental law and litigation practice represents clients in a wide array of environmental matters, including adjudicative proceedings, corporate and real estate transactions, and counseling on the avoidance or minimization of environmental liability.  The firm represents clients before federal and state courts and regulatory agencies in connection with both government and private-party suits, as well as negotiating alternative agreements.  Its lawyers develop plans for managing environmental liability, facilitating new project and product development, and structuring and supporting environmental management programs.

Roberts  received a J.D. degree from Stanford Law School, where he was notes editor of the Stanford Law Review, and an A.B. degree from Princeton University.  He clerked for the Judge David R. Thompson of the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals. Most recently, he was with O’Donnell & Shaeffer LLP in Los Angeles.

Sonnenschein, with more than 700 attorneys and other professionals in nine U.S. cities and a global reach, serves the legal needs of many of the world’s largest and best-known businesses, nonprofits and individuals.  For more information, visit www.sonnenschein.com.
