Sonnenschein's Public Law & Policy Strategies Group concentrates on issues and strategies important to clients with matters before Congress, the Executive Branch, national policymakers, and state and local legislators and regulators. These professionals assist clients in matters involving direct advocacy, federal budget and appropriations, grassroots communications, crisis management, coalition development, government marketing and partnership development, and international government relations.
The Health Care Group combines attorneys who have spent decades in private practice with lawyers who have served in high-level positions in the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services, Office of Inspector General (OIG), the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), and the Criminal and Civil Divisions of the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ). Collectively, these attorneys specialize in every aspect of health care law, including: Medicare and Medicaid coverage and reimbursement; mergers, acquisitions, joint ventures and contractual arrangements; public and private financing, tax and antitrust; clinical research and clinical trials; health information technology and e-health; managed care; and privacy and HIPAA compliance. The Group also includes some of the foremost national specialists in health care fraud and abuse and compliance, and has extensive experience in successfully defending civil False Claims Act (qui tam/whistleblower) and other fraud actions and investigations, conducting audits and investigations, and helping clients design and implement effective compliance programs.
The Internet, Communications & Data Protection Group handles the full range of legal issues resulting from the increased use of computer networks and the Internet. In addition to advising clients on best practices for protecting electronic information against hackers, disgruntled employees and corporate espionage agents, this unique group also supervises and conducts Internet investigations, designs anti-piracy and anti-spam programs for corporations and ISPs, and provides legal counsel for corporations addressing computer security incidents in order to minimize corporate liability.
The Government Contracts Group represents numerous government contractors across the country in every aspect of federal and state government contracts. The practice encompasses litigation of disputes relating to contract performance, contract award controversies (bid protests), civil and criminal false claims act investigations and litigation, and disputes between prime and subcontractors.
The Litigation Group combines the strengths of more than 350 litigators in offices nationwide with the expertise of our Washington, D.C. litigation group, which regularly represents our clients' litigation and business interests in state and federal courts throughout the country as well as in matters before agencies and departments of the federal government. Our D.C. litigators specialize in the following areas: appellate, environmental, government contracts, health care, insurance, intellectual property and technology, international trade, labor and employment, securities fraud, and white collar/government regulatory investigations and are actively engaged in pro bono cases.
The Corporate Group practices over the entire range of transactional activities including public offerings, private equity investments, mergers, acquisitions, private investment funds (including hedge funds and venture capital funds), spin-offs, refinancings and strategic alliances including outsourcing relationships.
The Intellectual Property and Technology Group has extensive experience in patent law, particularly relating to the Internet and computer-technology. The group is adept in intellectual property litigation, including patent infringement and cases concerning the protection of confidential information and trade secrets.
The FTC/CPSC Regulatory Group offers clients a long history of professional experience guiding companies through complex agency proceedings. In the ever-changing regulatory environment of the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), our lawyers offer up-to-the-minute counsel on questions relating to advertising, sales promotions, telemarketing and direct marketing, Internet sales programs, privacy, warranties, franchise and business opportunities, contests and sweepstakes, distribution and order fulfillment. Our practice before the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) is equally broad. We routinely counsel clients on all aspects of consumer product safety regulation, including consumer product recalls, voluntary and mandatory industry-wide standards, responding to consumer complaints and Freedom of Information Act requests, and compliance programs.
The Labor and Employment Group represents local, national and international employers with respect to human resource issues, laws and regulations affecting employment planning and corporate policies, procedures and practices. Lawyers in this practice regularly conduct workplace training for employer clients in such areas as workplace harassment, discrimination law compliance and litigation avoidance.
The Employee Benefits and Executive Compensation Group is one of the largest and most well-established in the country. Its lawyers are highly esteemed and well-respected among their peers and key government agencies, including the Internal Revenue Service, the Department of Labor, the Securities and Exchange Commission and the Pension Benefit Guaranty Corporation. The practice encompasses all aspects of employee benefit and executive compensation work including: general counseling; design, drafting and administration of retirement and welfare benefit plans; new product development; diverse ESOP matters (representing employers, lenders, trustees and advisors); design and negotiation of employment contracts, severance packages, golden parachute programs, equity-based compensation arrangements and nonqualified deferred compensation; and litigation.
