06-12-2008 Diversity Connections Summer 2008 Issue
The Summer 2008 issue of Sonnenschein's Diversity Connections contains a great deal of thought-provoking material, beginning with two front-page reflections on topics of tremendous importance.  In "An Echo from the Past and a Clarion Call for the Future," Paul Glad recalls the 1958 anti-miscegenation case of Loving v. Virginia in the context of last month's landmark gay marriage decision in California, In re Marriage Cases.  Also, beginning on page one is Ed Marquette's "Personal Journey," in which he muses about his own diverse status and how others might learn from his experience.

06-03-2008 Gary Hernandez Gary Hernandez Named One of the 50 Most Influential Minority Lawyers in America
Gary Hernandez, chair of Sonnenschein's national Insurance Regulatory Practice, has been named as one of the 50 most influential minority lawyers in America by The National Law Journal.  Honorees, noted "movers and shakers" all, are selected for their national impact on their legal fields and beyond during the past five years.
03-25-2008 Sonnenschein Listed in Multicultural Law Magazine's 2008  "Top 100 Law Firms for Diversity" Survey
Sonnenschein is listed in Multicultural Law Magazine's 2008 list of top 100 law firms for diversity.  To determine law firm rankings, surveys were sent to more than 200 law firms on the American Bar Association's list of firms with more than 100 lawyers. Multicultural Law Magazine addresses diversity in the legal profession and focuses on information that is valuable to improving the careers of minority and women lawyers.

01-16-2008 Sonnenschein Ranked Nationally as One of the Best 20 Law Firms for Diversity
Sonnenschein is ranked nationally as one of the Best 20 Law Firms for Diversity by Vault, a prominent publication aimed at law school students.  In the same report, our firm ranked 8th nationally for Diversity with Respect to Women.  Vault surveyed more than 18,800 associates at 167 firms nationwide to obtain these results.
12-07-2007 Sonnenschein Featured in Women in the Profession
Sonnenschein attorneys Mary Kay Lacey and Paul Glad are prominently featured and quoted in the October 2007 edition of Women in the Profession, a supplement to the California legal publication The Recorder.  The article "Laying the Groundwork" examines part-time work arrangements in today's legal environment and uses Lacey as a specific example.

Sonnenschein attorneys Sekret Sneed, Tery Gonsalves and Luke Guerra have been selected as top performing law associates of color in the United States by Stakeholders, Inc. 10-11-2007 James Hsu James L. Hsu Discusses California's Education Achievement Gap
On September 25, partner James L. Hsu participated in "Assuring Diversity - Growing California's Future Leaders," an en banc hearing on diversity issues.  Mr. Hsu's remarks focused on California's approach to addressing the educational achievement gap.  Representatives from California Public Utilities Commission, the California Public Employment Retirement System, the California Department of Insurance and the State Bar of California also participated in the event at the Los Angeles Metropolitan Authority.
10-11-2007 Fred McClure Sonnenschein Names New Managing Partner of Washington Office
Frederick D. McClure is the new managing partner of the Washington, DC office.  Mr. McClure held a prominent presence in the firm's Public Law & Policy Strategies group since joining the firm in 2004.  He will now play an even more significant role in the firm's continued growth, diversity initiatives, and success.  Among his many career highlights, Mr. McClure has served as assistant for legislative affairs to President Ronald Reagan, and associate deputy U.S. attorney general.
10-10-2007 Dee Joyce-Hayes Dee Joyce-Hayes Receives President's Award from St. Louis Women Lawyers Association
Sonnenschein of counsel Dee Joyce-Hayes was honored with the President's Award from the Womens Lawyers' Association of Greater St. Louis.  This award was presented in recognition for her two terms as circuit attorney in the city of St. Louis, for her tireless work in preventing domestic violence and for her role as the first woman elected as the Prosecuting Attorney in St. Louis.
10-10-2007 Jennifer Marler Jennifer Marler Receives CREW Network's Top Honor
Sonnenschein partner Jennifer Marler has received Commercial Real Estate Women (CREW) Network's Achievement of Excellence award, which is the Network's top honor.  Marler is recognized for her exceptional level of networking (and business deals) among women in commercial real estate.  She is credited for incorporating these professionals into numerous transactions across the country while retaining a significant leadership role in all matters.
10-03-2007 Sonnenschein Attorneys are Faculty for Patent Litigation Workshop in Taiwan
Yar R. Chaikovsky, Joel N. Bock and Yan Wang are litigation instructors at an interactive workshop designed to provide insight and training into the real-world dynamics of U.S. patent litigation.  The workshop will be held at the Ambassador Hotel on October 9, 2007 in Hsinchu, Taiwan.

09-17-2007 Human Rights Campaign Human Rights Campaign Foundation Gives Sonnenschein a Perfect Score
Sonnenschein has earned a perfect score in the Human Rights Campaign Foundation's 2008 Corporate Equality Index.  The rating is based on how companies interact with gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender employees, consumers and investors.  Criteria included existing non-discrimination policies, gender identity and expression and domestic partner health insurance.
09-11-2007 Harumi Hata Harumi Hata Discusses Diversity at State Bar of California Annual Meeting
Sonnenschein partner Harumi Hata spoke on a panel discussing diversity issues at the State Bar of California Annual Meeting on September 27-30, 2007.  The meeting was held in conjunction with the California Bench Bar Biannual Conference, which discussed a variety of issues affecting the California justice system.
08-28-2007 Rodney J. Boyd Rodney Boyd Named Most Influential Minority Business Leader in St. Louis
Sonnenschein partner Rodney Boyd has been named a "Most Influential Minority Business Leader" in the September 14 issue of the St. Louis Business Journal.  The list recognizes "ethnic minorities who make their mark on the St. Louis business community, from high-ranking executives to fast-moving entrepreneurs."  Mr. Boyd is a member of our Public Law & Policy Strategies Group in St. Louis.

Working Mother names Sonnenschein as one of the top 50 firms in the country for female lawyers in its August/September 2007 issue.  The magazine notes that the firms honored have taken the lead in helping women manage their careers successfully.

08-07-2007 Sonnenschein Strengthens Work-Life Balance Through the Project for Attorney Retention
Sonnenschein is a member of the Project for Attorney Retention (PAR), an initiative of The Center for WorkLife Law of the University of California Hastings College of the Law.  PAR seeks to improve recruiting and retention of talented attorneys through the use of work schedules that allow attorneys to better balance the competing demands of their work and their lives outside the office.

07-03-2007 Five Attorneys from LA Office Featured as "Super Lawyers' 2007 Southern California Rising Stars"
Sonnenschein partners Christopher Prince, James HsuFelix Woo, John Walker and of counsel Amadeo Cantu, all from our Los Angeles office, have been named by Super Lawyers as "2007 Southern California Rising Stars."  This list includes the best up-and-coming attorneys (lawyers 40 years old or younger, or in practice 10 years or less) as selected by attorneys chosen by the publication in 2007 as Super Lawyers.  Only 2.5 percent of the lawyers in Southern California are listed as Rising Stars.

The American Bar Foundation has established a program of 4-6 summer research fellowships to interest undergraduate students from diverse backgrounds to pursue graduate study in law.  The summer program is designed to introduce students to the rewards and demands of a law career. 
03-28-2007 Sara Lee Names Sonnenschein as Preferred Partner in Company's Diversity Initiative
Sara Lee Corporation has designated Sonnenschein as one of two "Sara Lee Preferred Partners" for 2007, based upon the firm's overall superior quality of legal services and diversity performance.  Sara Lee's own diversity program is well-known in the legal industry and regarded as a corporate model.  Those firms that receive the "Preferred Partners" status mirror Sara Lee's commitment to service, performance, talent and diversity.

10-27-2006 Sonnenschein Plays Role in NJ Ruling on Gay/Lesbian Marriage
On October 25, 2006, the New Jersey Supreme Court ruled that gays and lesbians are entitled to all marital rights enjoyed by heterosexual couples, a decision viewed as a major victory for the LGBT civil rights movement.  Sonnenschein is proud to have been involved in this pivotal ruling by representing the former Chair of the Family Law Section of the New Jersey State Bar Association as an amicus. Lawyers and paralegals that lent their efforts to the brief include Deborah RennerBen Delfin, Rebecca Hughes Parker, Karen Ogle, Patrice Ho Sang and Narelle Ho Sang.

09-29-2006 Gary Hernandez Gary Hernandez Named to Hispanic Business Magazine's '100 Influentials' List
Sonnenschein partner Gary Hernandez has been honored by Hispanic Business magazine by being named among its '100 Influentials' for 2006.  The list includes five diverse categories—Government, Corporate, Education, Arts & Entertainment and Other Vistas—and profiles "extraordinary individuals chosen for their insight and drive, and, most importantly, for the examples they set in their communities."  Gary also has been named by the San Francisco Business Times as one of the "Bay Area’s Most Influential Hispanics in 2005."

Sonnenschein Partner Mary G. Wilson has been honored by Law Bulletin Publishing Company as one of '40 Illinois Attorneys Under Forty to Watch' for 2006.  Honorees were selected based on their passion for the profession, number of successful verdicts, and their dedication and commitment to the field of law.  Ms. Wilson, who specializes in facilitating tax-exempt financing, was especially noted for her skill and knowledge with helping to steer complex bond financing transactions to satisfactory results.
09-11-2006 Presumed Equal Sonnenschein Ranked the Number One Law Firm For Women in Harvard Study
Sonnenschein is ranked number one in the country in Presumed Equal: What America's Top Women Lawyers Really Think About Their Firms, a survey conducted by members of the Women's Law Association at Harvard Law School.  The survey, sent to 16,000 women attorneys at the nation's 105 largest law firms, asked women attorneys to rate their own firms on issues such as leadership and advancement opportunities, work-life balance, mentoring and diversity.
