In 2005, Sonnenschein founded the Legacy Charter School. Legacy is a free, public elementary charter school located in the impoverished neighborhood of North Lawndale in Chicago, Illinois. Sonnenschein and its personnel provide financial, managerial and operational support to Legacy. It is believed to be the first charter school to be operated by a law firm.
Legacy opened its doors in August 2005 and currently serves approximately 200 children in pre-kindergarten to third grade. The school’s mission is to create an outstanding center for teaching and learning for children and their families that will recognize and nurture the full potential of every child, provide a foundation for a college education and educate students to be creative and critical thinkers and responsible citizens in school, at home and in the broader community.
Legacy’s mission is to create an outstanding center for teaching and learning for children and their families, one that will recognize and nurture the full potential of every child, provide a foundation for a college education and teach students to be creative, critical thinkers and responsible citizens in school, at home and in the community.
Legacy believes that a high-quality education will have the greatest impact if it starts at an early age, embraces the individual ability and potential of each child, and emphasizes both social-emotional growth and academic achievement. Legacy believes that an elementary education should motivate students to be life-long learners and independent thinkers and begin to prepare students for success in college. It must teach the foundations of a just society and prepare students to become engaged participants in their community. |
