Mr. Owens is a member of Sonnenschein’s Intellectual Property & Technology Practice supporting clients in all aspects of the patent and trademark process.
Mr. Owens prepares and prosecutes patent applications on behalf of corporate clients for inventions in both the high-tech and business sectors. His background and experience allow him to understand and assist inventors and organizations with complex hardware and software technologies as well as financial and business processes. His practice includes:
- Drafting and prosecuting business method patents related to various types of software, transactional, and service systems which include inventory management, data protocols, advertising, dynamic billing, wireless and financial transactions, data and information management, e-commerce and computing profiles.
- Drafting and prosecuting patent applications for semiconductors, wireless devices, telecommunications, fuel cells, microelectromechanical systems (MEMS), stream processing, radio frequency identification (RFID) tags, interactive media, printing devices and memory, cache, processor, and database architectures among others.
Legal Experience
- Develops patent and trademark portfolios for Fortune 500 companies as well as various startups.
- Provides patent and technical analysis, opinions, strategy, searches and guidance to inventors and in-house counsel and assists in conducting audits of intellectual property.
- Performs patent litigation support, analysis, and legal and technical tasks to both enforce intellectual property rights and defend clients.
- Determines suitable avenues of protection, registration and commercializing for all types of intellectual property assets.
- Negotiates and drafts licensing and royalty agreements, intellectual property related contracts, patent disclosures and intellectual property management systems and procedures.
- Performs important intellectual property due diligence and analysis in support of all types of corporate and venture capital issues, research and transactions. The due diligence typically requires extensive analysis, technical and otherwise, of intellectual property portfolios and agreements.
- Engages in legal and technical support on matters that involve complex technologies and engineering.
